Commenting Is A Privilege, Not A Right! Join The Revolution!

Go Ahead, Steal This Badge! πŸ™‚

I’ve been blogging for five years now. MirrorCracked was created in April this year, after I closed down all my other blogs. Some of you have just started blogging and most of you are veterans already – been here longer than I have. There is a reason why people choose to blog.

Communication has always made our species different from the others. From smoke signals to text messages, we have come a long way, and somewhere along this journey, we have realized the importance of communicating effectively. Writing is one of the most respected art forms and bloggers are artists in their own right. We write stories, we emote, we ideate, we rant, we make others laugh, we make others cringe in disgust – all through the written word, which is displayed publicly, in an open forum where anyone can read and comment.

It is a channel through which we can make our creativity known to the world. It is a platform to share our joys, sorrows, opinions and views with complete strangers and build relationships with these strangers that many a time transcend borders, time, age and sex. People who blog are a closely-knit family who understand each others intentions for blogging and respect them for just being.

Some people take advantage of this.

There are instances where certain people are not satisfied with what they have and aspire for more and more. Greed and jealousy are emotions as primal as any, and the fact that we have evolved from being Neanderthals probably means that we have learned to curb these instincts. Sadly, evolution has stopped in many people who are still struggling to find out their place in the food chain. I used to call them as assholes and now, I discovered they are called Trolls.

Have you ever received a comment on your blog from a person who’s just being nasty, uses vile language and expresses his/her general lack of brains? That person is a Troll. Troll comments do not always go into the spam folder – most Trolls are a single person, using different names and different email IDs, and if the Troll is clever, he/she would use different terminals to avoid having the same IP address registered.

There are other ways a Troll can harass genuine bloggers. Some blogs in wordpress have this option where people can go and comment without having to log in. I could very easily pose as anyone and leave a nasty comment in a blog using someone else’s name, email and website. To avoid this, I urge all wordpress users to log in whenever you are commenting on others’ blogs, so that your picture is visible in the comments. WordPress users commenting on Blogspot have to use OpenID, and this can happen only if you are logged in. So, no worries there.

I am starting a movement here. I am sick and tired of getting Troll’ed. If you feel the same, then join me in this worldwide hunt to weed out Trolls from blogs everywhere. I am sharing the IP addresses of the Trolls that have harassed me so far. These IPs are already on my blacklist. Please add them to your blacklists too, and share the IPs of any Trolls that you might have encountered. We have to block out these fucking assholes.

Always remember these two things:

  1. Commenting is a privilege, not a right.
  2. Trolls are human beings who have stopped evolving a long time ago.

  1. Yay! first one to comment and am not a troll πŸ˜€
    done! πŸ™‚ Stole the badge and blacklisted the trolls mentioned

  2. well it has been like 4 months since i have been blogging and i thoroughly agree with you that the journey till date has been wonderful …..i have been able to ventilate my ideas , share views of people with different cultural background so in all the experience has been joyful i too have come across one such troll on my blog….he posted the same comment on mine and withering willows blog…….and then both of us realized that this person was actually trying to increase the no. of hits on his site..a real moron! …
    but i must say its a nice blog and i hope to visit it often! πŸ˜€

  3. “They were sexually abused by their parents when they were young (which probably explains their shyness while commenting!)”

    was this really necessary?
    Anyway I will put the badge in the support of the movement πŸ™‚

  4. I should just add, even if some one thinks commenting is a right…every right comes with a responsibility; here the responsibility is not to abuse your right. Be decent, if not intelligent! Guess trolls are exempt because they lack that intelligence!

  5. I am commending your creativity on this line “Message to the Trolls who are reading this: Go fuck a hairy duck and get a life.”

    This was justtttttttt brilliant…!! Hey, am sorry buddy to see someone is harasssing like this. I hope something gets into this head after reading this post. And I completely join in your tryst for making this blogosphere a healthy place….! You certainly have my support for this.

  6. Nikhil

    Well done on this post!

    I think we could make a repository of trolls’ IP addresses (and their fake email IDs) in one place and make it useful to all.

    I have had visits and abuse from these IP addresses lately:

    122.162.153.72 (Delhi)

    122.162.162.180 (Delhi)

    Past trolls have come from:

    219.91.242.76 (Mumbai)

    123.201.242.117 (Mumbai)

    151.191.175.232 (New York)

    124.30.124.66 (Bangalore)

    I shall add the badge to my sidebar and/ or my comments page.

  7. Nikhil, this is a very strong post against those nasty commentators. I hope they learn from their mistakes. But we shudn’t care, we need to block these trolls like u said. After ur experience I have turned on comment moderation for new commentators. Thanks for sharing the IP, I have added to the blacklist. Indeed they are evolution’s mistakes.

  8. go nikhil! hope this solves your troll problems. πŸ™‚ they really need to get a life and stop messing up with yours!

  9. @Apar
    Yay! Congrats on being the first one to comment! πŸ˜€
    And yeah, blacklist these frikkin trolls! Intelligence is something they aspire for! πŸ˜€

    @Arpit
    Yeah, some trolls are like that! They look for personal edification! πŸ˜€

    @Reema
    I think it was… πŸ™‚

    @Rainzz
    It’s quite easy – just use the tag in a text widget.. Look them up in the wordpress forums, it’s quite easy… πŸ™‚

    @Deeps
    Hahaha! Thanks for your support! πŸ˜€
    I hope this ends soon! I’m getting pissed off…

    @Shefaly
    Thanks! And yes, I think we should do something like that. I’m thinking of a google docs page which everyone can access and update the name and IP address of their troll…

    @Dinesh
    Thanks for the support! πŸ™‚
    Yeah, if you’ve had troll problem, please share the IPs so that I can blacklist them here as well… πŸ™‚

    @Sulz
    Thanks a lot for your support! πŸ˜€

    @Kaavya
    Thanks a lot! πŸ™‚

  10. I have stolen the badge and will put it on my blog for your support macha ..

    I hv never come across any trolls till now .. But u never know what’s in the box for you .. So it’s an amazing post and I will be careful and will keep u updated with the IPs of trolls if I get one !!

    Keep up the good work, Macha !!

  11. Great Nikhil, I am too sick of people from PPC(Pill, Porn and Casino) all they do is create a dummy blog and get other people’s content so that they can make money by ad sense: Shame on you ad sense.

  12. Even though a part of me thinks commenting is a right… I support ur movement fully…. these trolls need to be banned!

  13. was going to point to the dynamic ip thingy….anshul had already pointed out.

    This is a problem…that people have to face. its not gonna go away as all the bad things in the world

    dont block ip’s fellas…..bad idea.

  14. @ Anshul and @EH

    I definitely do not think any of us would enjoy reading our favourite blogs and find the blogger being abused in the comments section.

    With IP addresses, WordPress offers two possibilities – moderation or outright blacklisting. Most of us allow free commenting anyway. Moderation would not be such a drastic step from it to preserve the general tone of discussion and the overall experience of blogging. Blacklisting would be.

  15. If I was a troll, I would be too ashamed to continue trolling after reading ur note in the end…very effective…
    oops…i 4got 2 log in πŸ˜› …but i like this blog, so I really wouldn’t want 2 leave any abusive comments…
    nice post!!! πŸ™‚

  16. fortunately, i’ve never come across trolls b4…but thanx!!
    I’ve taken the badge…would’ve even if u hadn’t said so… πŸ˜€

  17. Shefaly, Ok, Point taken, since there is no other way out… BTW, the IP addresses you mentioned are pretty close to my IPs. πŸ™‚

  18. Nikhil, congratulations for taking this bold step. I am supporting you on this and will put up the badge on one of my pages.
    Anshul and Shefaly, I must tell you that there is one IP on my blog in my moderation which is used by at least 5-6 people. One of these was on the borderline of being abusive and that is why the ip went into moderation. Then I found out that one regular and very nice and sweet commentator of mine had this same ip! I wrote immediately to the person and finally we realised that all these people were indeed different. At times the same ip is given I think because people use hidden ip’s etc. well, I am not a technical person, but something weird about it! I have no explanation for this phenomena. If someone knows, please tell.

    However I am publishing here the list of ip’s which are on my blacklist. This is a long list because if I get spam comments which akisment misses on a regular basis, these too go here!

    I have to add that a very small percentage of these people abused me personally. They have simply used filthy words, sick and vulgar language against other commentators on my sensitive posts. And many of them have not stopped with one comment. they have sent comment after comment after comment abusing with the choicest words. Some of them have also sent me abusive mails.

  19. @Nita you are quite correct. IPs can be hidden and as seen in the terror mails, one can hack a Wi-Fi router system to send an email from your IP.

    @Nikhil Also like I have BSNL BB which gives dynamic IP so its quite a task to block such connection.

  20. @ Reema

    Hacking a wi-fi router is a minor job; as is anonymising one’s IP. But if someone is going to the extent of anonymising his or her IP, it is sure a dedicated troll I must say! πŸ™‚

    Since it is about their assumption that they can have free rein with their abusive language and more importantly, irrelevant commentary, moderating them is not such a drastic step.

  21. Nikhil,

    ala Spiderman (and here I am paraphrasing) “With great popularity comes great trolling”.
    And with great trolling comes Troll-Rage!
    but that apart, blogger has some comment moderation options. U can select an option where the comments will be mailed to u for approval before being posted. Also, there is an option to restrict anonymous comments. You need to be logged in etc. I have never used word press so I dont know but am sure they have options like this somewhere.

    Having said that, nice blog πŸ™‚ I think I like your brand of humour.

    Cheers Mate!

    PS: Am not a troll πŸ˜‰ An ogre maybe, but just not a troll.

  22. this is real bad..even in my blog i get lots of abusive comments..i dont pay any attention too πŸ˜› …

    i just had a doubt ..u have heard about gravtar right ..
    what if someone uses my mail ID without logging in .. it will show my picture then too 😦

  23. Me not came across such problems buddy!!!
    Anyways! thanks for the info.. will be useful in future when Jobless becomes as popular as MirrorCracked

  24. @all

    blocking i.p addresses seems like a better solution…but i believe it really isn’t that effective.

    most of the ip addresses listed here seem to be dynamic..
    meaning “the troll” is going to come online with another ip address when he(or she) logs back in and you have just blocked prospective readers.

    anonymous browsing services exist for a reason…. When i was in college there were tons of services blocked by content filtering firewalls and these services gave me respite before they were added to the blacklist by the network admin.( we got around that tiny hurdle as well πŸ˜‰ )

    by blocking out anonymous ip addresses, you end up denying services to lot of people in universities/countries behind firewalls.

    universities and companies use public ip addresses…by blocking just one ip. you would have blocked 1000s of people from your site.

    Sure trolls use these services to do their ugly stuff. but lot of other good people use it too….and habitual trolls are gonna find a way always. you are not gonna block them off by just blocking particular ips.

    moderation/spam filters help to reduce though. blocking is going to push the guy to try harder and that is bad.

  25. Whoa! Great initiative Niks!!
    Done with the badge…thanks to you πŸ™‚

    *# Trolls are human beings who have stopped evolving a long time ago.* ROFL!

    @Nita
    Loooong list, i say!

  26. Sorry for coming in here so late.

    In my very few months of blogging I have come across 2-3 trolls and I somehow have the hunch that I know them as well.

    And I am with you in this drive..
